Attorney Raises Questions

In a letter to the Editor of the Transcript, Attorney Richard Taskin questioned the legality of the police lockdown done at Drury High School. My guess would be that he has been hired to represent one of the students that were allegedly in possession of drugs or alcohol.

Would he prefer that drug possession and alcohol possession in the schools be ignored? I am sure there were stresses and anxiety that were felt by students and teachers during the lockdown. Seems to me to be a small price to pay for a drug-free, alcohol-free school environment. To my understanding the lockdown was done by the book. Much preparation went into it, and a very thorough, detailed plan was put in place.

I applaud the pro-active stance that the administration of the North Adams School District took in the undertaking of this lockdown. I would support it being done again – if and when it is deemed necessary by the school district administration.

During the lockdown, there was alcohol found in a car, and I think there were some small quantities of marijuana or unidentified drugs found in a couple of lockers. To my knowledge, there was noone in possession. Andy mentioned in any earlier comment that there were some found with marijuana at an earlier date.

I don't have those details. I know there were school suspensions, and I believe there are court appearances scheduled.

I don't have any information on that one, but I'll check into it.

Chris, the word from the administration is that the student athlete received a 5 day suspension with an option to reduce to 3 days if she agreed to attend counseling sessions at a counseling center. She agreed to this, so the suspension was for three days. I've also been told she was not able to attend games or practice sessions. A new drug & alcohol policy subcommittee was formed at school committee at tonight's meeting, and you'll see what likely will be a very strict policy in place early next year. Their report to the school committee is scheduled for March.

I have been told that any students involved in alcohol or drug possession have received suspensions and pending charges, including the student athlete in question. I'm not aware of any special treatment for her. She was not allowed to play the last few games of the season (which is actually an additional consequence of her actions than those received by those students not participating in athletics). The school district policy on these issues needs to be spelled out more clearly and needs to show uniformity in the consequences of alcohol and drug possession. The newly formed school committee subcommittee will be addressing those issues.
